It’s hard to believe you’re here but after weeks of prep, the time has come. Your big move is happening tomorrow. That means you can sit back, relax, and count down the hours until the movers arrive…right?

Not so fast.

While the day before you move shouldn’t be stressful, there are things you can do to ensure the big day goes off without a hitch. And so, as one of Sydney’s most trusted removal companies, we thought we’d share with you our list of 6 things you can do the day before your move that will make moving day just a little easier.

1. Contact Your Removal Team

You may be thinking, “Come on, I’ve talked to my team twenty times over the last few weeks. Do I really need to touch base with them again the day before the move?”

Yes. You do. You really do.

No one likes to admit it, but double bookings can happen, so it’s always a good idea to touch base with your movers and confirm they have you on the schedule for the next day. Be sure to confirm all the details included in your estimate.

The good news is that 99% of removal teams are professional experts and will be prepared for your move…but it’s always a good idea to check in just to be safe.

2. Finish Packing Your Essentials Box or Bag

Now is a great time to make sure you’ve gathered all those things you’ll want to have easy access to for your first night in your new home. This should include:

  • Personal belongings – a change of clothes, pajamas, toothbrushes, toiletries, a towel (and we’ll tell you right now that nothing feels better than a hot shower after a long moving day), and medications
  • Practical items – a set of disposable plates, cups, and flatware for each family member, snacks, your coffee pot, and coffee (there’s nothing worse than not having access to coffee the morning after a move)
  • Household items – cleaners, rags, paper towels, a screwdriver, a hammer, and any other small tool or piece of equipment that might come in handy during or just after your move.

3. Contact the Your Utility Company

There’s nothing worse than arriving at your new home only to find the electricity and/or water haven’t been turned on.

Give your utility company a call to make sure everything is scheduled to be turned on by the time you arrive in your new home—gas, electricity, water, etc.

Similarly, you’ll want to confirm that utilities in your former home are scheduled to be turned off after you’ve left.

4. Disassemble Large Furniture

You can disregard this tip if you paid to have your removal team take care of disassembling large furniture for you but, because most removalists charge for this service, some clients prefer to tackle this job themselves in order to save money.

If you’ve decided to DIY the disassembly, the day before your move is a good time to get started. Any large pieces of furniture that can be disassembled (like bed frames, china hutches, or tables with removable legs) should be broken down into their smallest components. Be sure to put all screws and bolts in a zip-top baggie and tape or secure it to the furniture so it isn’t lost during the move.

5. Take Care of Appliances

Make sure large appliances that aren’t moving with you are unplugged and drained (as in the case of washing machines or dishwashers). Freezers should have been defrosted weeks in advance, but now is a good time to make sure the fridge and freezer are clear of any last-minute items and wiped clean. The same goes for the oven and washer/dryer.

6. Prep Parking for the Moving Truck

If you have rented a large moving truck that will have to park on the street, it’s always nice to reach out to neighbors and let them know you’ll be moving the following day.

If you are moving to or from an apartment complex, you’ve likely already made arrangements to have a moving truck parked on the property for a time, but it’s always a good idea to reach out to them the day before and remind them of the circumstances.

And so…

We hope these tips help make the day before your move productive and stress-free.
