When it comes to packing for a move, some items are trickier to pack than others. Some items practically pack themselves. Glassware has its own, handily divided boxes one can pick up at any moving supply company. The same goes for clothing, televisions, and computer monitors. But what about the random, smaller appliances that fill our homes? How does one tackle the toaster? Do you just pick up the blender and carry it out of the house?
Packing up small appliances isn’t hard…but they do require a bit of extra TLC to ensure they make the move safely. And that’s why, as one of Sydney’s most trusted removal companies, we decided to share our top 6 tips for moving small appliances to your new home.
1. Clean Before You Pack
Do yourself a favor and give small appliances a good cleaning before you start packing. Wipe down exterior surfaces with a rag and your everyday cleaning spray. Empty the toaster of crumbs. Make sure the air fryer basket is thoroughly cleaned and free from debris or grease. The same goes for rice cookers, bread makers, and any other appliance that may need a good cleaning.
Be sure to allow plenty of time for your items to dry before you begin the packing process.
2. Disassemble and Gather Accessories
Break each appliance into smaller parts if possible. Remove the blender jar from the base, the bowl from your stand mixer, and the blade arm from your immersion blender.
Gather any parts that aren’t currently with the appliance—perhaps you only use one shelf in your toaster oven and keep the other stored in the pantry, or have the grating blades for your food processor tucked away in a drawer. You’ll want to have all pieces collected so you can pack them together…because there’s nothing worse than unpacking the box labeled “blender” so you can whip up a batch of margaritas to celebrate your successful move only to find that the jar and blade are MIA.
3. Take Care of Cords
The cords of small appliances require a little extra care. Wind cords as close to the base as possible and secure with a twist tie or rubber band. If you want to go the extra mile, wrap the cord and plug with a bit of packing paper or bubble wrap to prevent the plug from scratching the exterior of the appliance (trust us, we’ve seen it happen).
4. Pick the Perfect Box
The best box to pack your appliances is in its original packaging as it was designed to perfectly house each appliance and all its accessories. But we understand the odds of you having the box that belongs to your eight-year-old blender are slim.
If you don’t have the original packaging, opt for small- to medium-sized boxes. Appliances can be heavy and you don’t want to fill a large box with multiple appliances as it will be too heavy for your removal team to move.
Make sure your boxes are taped to support heavier items. Place a piece of tape along the seam that runs down the middle of the mix and each open edge. Then place 2 – 3 strips across the bottom of the box (perpendicular to the center seam) to provide additional support. Line the box with several sheets of crumpled packing paper to serve as padding.
5. Wrap
Wrap each piece of the appliance with packing paper or bubble wrap and secure with tape. Place the wrapped appliance in your prepared box. If the appliance is small and you have room for another, you may add an additional appliance. Wrap all accessories and place them in the box. Use packing paper or bubble wrap to pad the space between appliances. Fill the remainder of the box with packing paper or lightweight items like kitchen towels, napkins, or plastic cups.
6. Close and Label
Close your box and tape to secure it. Be sure to clearly label the box on the top and the sides. This will help you prioritise what to unpack first when you get into your new home. Be sure to mark boxes containing glass or delicate items as “fragile” so your removal team knows to treat them with extra care and make sure they are on top of any stacked boxes.
