1. Start Planning Early…(like, really early)

If you know you’ll be moving during the holiday season, it is imperative that you start planning well in advance. Give yourself a minimum of three weeks to pack, but keep in mind that much of your weekend time will likely be filled with attending holiday events or parties.

The moral of the story is this—when it comes to planning for a holiday move, there’s no such thing as too early.

2. Schedule Holiday Get Togethers AWAY From Home

If you’ve ever moved before, you know that the packing process can leave your home in a state of disarray. And if you’re trying to pack and host a holiday party at your home, your blood pressure is likely to skyrocket.

Take some of the pressure off by planning your holiday party outside of the home. You can rent a room at a local restaurant or ask a local friend or family member to host the gathering this year. If you simply must have the party in-house, consider reducing the number of guests and the size of the affair.

3. Try to Schedule Your Moving Date JUST After Christmas

People around the world often take the week after Christmas off to go on holiday or just relax at home and recover from the hustle and bustle of the season. What they most certainly are not doing is scheduling a home move…which can work to your advantage.

The week after Christmas is usually a great time to schedule a move as few people are competing for the services of trusted removalists. You may even enjoy a discounted rate.

4. Leave Out a Little Holiday Décor

Does the idea of dealing with a Christmas tree and a holiday move fill you with dread? Be kind to yourself and alter your holiday decorating in a way that reduces stress levels. Perhaps, instead of a large Christmas tree, you get a table-top version that can be packed away quickly. And maybe you still have a holiday wreath hanging from your door but don’t put lights on the exterior of your home.

Putting out a few decorations helps you get into the holiday spirit without having to deal with the hassle of packing up Christmas décor in addition to everything else you have on your plate.

5. Add Your New Address to Christmas Cards

We love this idea that a customer recommended! You’re likely sending out holiday cards anyway…so why not kill two birds with one stone and turn your holiday greeting card into a holiday card/new address announcement combo?

There are tons of online services like Snapfish and La La Land that will let you customise a card to send seasons greetings and your new address simultaneously.

6. Get Specific When Labeling Boxes

Labeling boxes clearly is always important any time you move, but it can be a lifesaver when moving during the holidays.

If you are moving the week after Christmas and are attending a big bash on New Year’s Eve, you’ll want to make sure that your outfit options (including shoes and accessories) are all packed together in a box that is labeled accordingly. The same goes for workout equipment if you plan to start the whole “new year/new you” campaign when January rolls around.

The bottom line is this—anything that will be a priority to open right after the move should be marked accordingly. Some clients recommend using colored tape as a clear signal that those boxes should be accessible above all others.
