They say, moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do, and it has been rated as nerve-racking as going through a divorce.

If you’re not just moving down the road but moving interstate, the uprooting can be even more stressful than usual.

At Holloway Removals we’ve don’t it many times, so we decided to put together this moving interstate checklist so that this time in your life can be as stress-free as possible.

Two months before moving interstate

Start sorting through what you own and pick out what you’ll bring and what you want to get rid of. The items that you don’t want to keep, sort in to two piles – what to give to charity and what to sell.

With the items that you want to sell, consider having a garage sale, listing products on Gumtree or eBay, or finding new homes for those items. Moving can be expensive and any money you make from the sale of your unwanted items can go towards the big move.

Next, collect any boxes or suitcases you have and consider using them for the move. This will help you save on ordering extra storage containers.

Begin packing items you won’t need over the next two months, like extra linen or winter clothes.

Call your bank and utility companies to let them know that you’re moving interstate. Get them to change your address.

One month to one day before the interstate move

Continue packing – if you pack a box a day, it’ll save you from the mad rush at the end.

Start buying any boxes, ropes, bubble wrap and packing tape you might need for the organisation of your boxes.

If you have kids, get them involved and task them with sorting through their things and packing up their toys. It can take a while for them to get a move on, so start early!

A month before moving interstate is also a good time to start sorting through your official documents, throwing out anything you don’t need and filing them into boxes with labels.

To help with the stress relief, organise a dinner with friends and family to say goodbye, or ask a family member to help organise a party for you.

Moving Day

When the big day comes, help with the loading of the truck, instructing the removalists to put the heavier items on the bottom and to take care of your fragile goods.

Do a big sweep of the house to double check every nook and cranny and ensure nothing is left behind.

To be safe, carry all of your most important items and documents with you so that they don’t get lost in transit.

And there you have it – your checklist for moving interstate. And to make it an even smoother ride, give Holloway Removals a call. We’re pros at taking the stress out of moving and we’ve moved many a family across the country from Sydney to Melbourne,  Brisbane to Adelaide, and everwhere in between.
