While it is true that moving into a new home is an exciting time it can also be stressful. You may be leaving a home you love. Your children may be leaving the only home they’ve ever known. Even pets can succumb to the stress of picking up stakes and relocating to somewhere new.

If you’re planning for an upcoming move, take some time to add a little relaxation to your post-move itinerary. You’ll be glad you did, and it will give you something to look forward to as you’re in the midst of moving stress.

As one of Sydney’s most trusted removal companies, we know a thing or two about moving…and how to recover from it. That’s why we’re sharing our 7 favorite ways to decompress and relax after a hectic move (and, let’s be honest, every move is hectic at some point during the process).

1. Postpone Unpacking

To be clear we are not suggesting you unpack nothing…but we are saying you should lose the idea of having your entire home unpacked within 48 hours of your move.

Yes, there are certain things that need to be unpacked right away—things like your coffee pot (who can live without that??), your bathroom necessities, kitchen essentials, clothing…you get the idea.

For the rest, unpack what you need…but give yourself permission to postpone unpacking and storing non-essentials (think setting up a guest room or putting away holiday décor) until you’ve had a chance to wind down and settle into your home.

2. Enjoy a Meal Out

You’ve just unloaded your boxes and unpacked your essentials, so the last thing you’ll want to do is dirty the kitchen by cooking a meal. Plan to enjoy a meal out for the first night in your home or, if you can’t bear the thought of cleaning up to go out somewhere, call in a takeaway order or (even better in our opinion) have food delivered.

But if you are one of those people who loves to cook and has been waiting to christen your new kitchen…hey, have at it. We’ve heard such people exist…we’ve just never met them.

3. Explore Your New Neighborhood

There are a couple of ways to do this. One of the easiest is to grab the family after you finish your nice meal out and go for a walk around your new neighborhood. Your kids might get the opportunity to make new friends, and everyone will enjoy getting better oriented with your new location.

Another option is loading everyone in the car and driving around your new area. Take in all the fun businesses that are now closer to your new home. Make a list of local eateries you’d like to try out and businesses you want to frequent.

4. Schedule a Massage

Seriously, this may be the single best thing you do for yourself and/or your spouse or significant other. Schedule a massage within a day or two of move-in. If you don’t have a regular masseuse, schedule your appointment with a therapist in your new area.

Your muscles are likely to be tight and sore…both from stress and physical exertion…so take the time to provide a little TLC for yourself and the person you love.

5. Enjoy the Local Perks

Is your new home closer to the city zoo? Are you within walking distance of an incredible park or outdoor area? Are you five minutes away from the city’s premier pizza joint? Take advantage of your new location by getting out and enjoying some of the newly-near-to-you perks your new location provides.

Other places to consider include:

  • Movie theaters
  • Music venues
  • Museums
  • Recreational areas (ski resorts, lakes, beaches, bike trails)

6. Find Your Zen with Yoga

Yoga is a great way to relax your body and relieve stress. A quick internet search should provide you with local yoga studios and some parks offer outdoor classes where you can find your Zen while enjoying nature.

If you’re reluctant to spend money on studio membership and outdoor yoga isn’t an option, fear not. There are tons of amazing instructors that can be found online and offer free classes on YouTube.

7. Throw a Housewarming Party

This isn’t for everyone, but if you love entertaining and can’t wait to share your new home with those you love, consider hosting a housewarming party for friends and family. Just be sure to allow enough time to properly unpack and set up your home before having guests over.
